About the Author
Joshua S. Goldstein is Professor Emeritus of International Relations at American University, Nonresident Sadat Senior Fellow at the University of Maryland's CIDCM, and Research Scholar in the Department of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is the recipient of the International Studies Association's 2001-2010 Best Book of the Decade Award for War and Gender (Cambridge University Press, 2001).

Jon C. Pevehouse is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is the recipient of the International Studies Association's 2009 Karl Deutsch Award.

Great Introductory Text

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.

Too Expensive

As a prof, I used this book in my intro IR course for many years. After not teaching the course for four years, I went to order it for this Fall, and found it cost 120 bucks. I just can't bring myself to do this to the students. The book is excellent, but not worth the price. I will not be assigning it.

WAY too expensive

I've TA'd for this class for 2 years now, and the publishers have just spiked the price. There's no reason that this 150-page book should cost more than $30. This is exploitation, pure and simple. Professors please do not assign this book.

Update: When I took this class, I paid $5 for a used copy of the 5th edition. Now you can get older editions for $0.01. As long as you're comfortable with a little insecurity, I'd almost recommend buying an older edition and saving yourself $100. They're virtually the same thing, just without a picture of Psy on the front.

Good sequel and setup for the final novel

Once again Niles has done a very good job of good, but somewhat predicatble, character develop and plotline.

This book does a very good job of picking up where the first novel left off, but the twists and turns aren't there as they were in the first. The plot is pretty straight foward but pretty enjoyable as well. What this book does is setup for a great third installment of the trilogy. A lot of things are setup that will not be dealth with until Darkwell, which makes for a great third installment, but does take away some from this book. Unfortunately, if you pick up Darkwell without reading Black Wizards, you will be totally lost, which obviously is the whole point.

I thought the first book "Darkwalker on Moonshae" was much better. Although the author brings back the main characters, and even adds a few more, we are still left with what I feel was a rather lame ending to another large battle. Overall, I have started the third book, "Darkwell" and the storyline with all three is still very good. It's an older series, but I read Darkwalker when I was in H.S (almost 15 years ago) and didnt even realize there were sequels. Still an enjoyable set.

Just as good if not better then the first of the series of Moonshae. The story is really awesome and the main villians/antagonist are amazing. The creatures have such great creepy detail to them and the action/violence is exciting. An awesome read and strongly recommend.

are amazing. They're very in depth and well formatted

These books, combined with the audio CD (if you can get it), are amazing. They're very in depth and well formatted. Dr. Yadollah's teaching style brings you from knowing zero Farsi to being able to understand complex sentences and structure. I had the advantage of taking a year of college Farsi as well as supplementing that with some italki.com lessons. However, the text provided in my classroom sessions are not nearly as good as what these books are.

If you can dedicate at least an hour a day to these books and audio CDs, you will learn a lot of Persian. I used Anki to put all the vocabulary into flashcard form and some italki.com to converse with native speakers (this is HUGELY important). I highly recommend these books and if you can GET THE CD!

Fantastic. Realistically

Fantastic. Realistically, you can't learn a language without audio. Bite the bullet and get the disc. The audio follows the book which is in a logical sequence and it is certainly not skimpy for the price. I had to order the disc separately (search online). It cost $50.00 and came from Iran, fortunately with tracking. Cost-effective. Worth every penny.
