What a waste

Not sure what all the 5 stars are about. I really can't believe I finished this. I will say I skipped LOTS of pages. The hero of the story was a cheater pretty much through this whole book. He never redeemed himself in my opinion. The h is awkward and a doormat. Don't waste your time or money on this book.

Tanner and Grace

The story is narrated from both (first person) Tanner and Grace's perspectives. The naivety of Grace and the evilness of Tanner is what kept me captivated. I say evilness loosely because Tanner does have a reason for doing what he does and it makes sense. The character development and story development were very good, most of all it was realistic even her change of appearance. I hate these makeovers that occur in one day, change takes time and the author completely understands how real people react when asked to change.

Surprise!

Awesome! In the beginning of the story, Grace is such a nice, innocent, young girl trying to finish college. Tanner, on the other hand, is a selfish, self-centered player! To con his parents out of money to go on tour with his band, Tanner devises a plan. One that will destroy Grace if she ever discovers what he is up to. The problem: Tanner never planned on falling in love and he just may lose Grace in the process!

Fine verse

It is crazy that this book should be out of print. What are publishers thinking of? The verses are a delight, though they become increasingly tragic as the book progresses - "The Sea Bell" is a devastating account of something like clinical depression, yet like many of the rest it has a strange beauty. On the surface much is easy-to-read verse, but often has subtle allusions to deep matters. Many links with "The Lord of the Rings" for those who know where to look, and, I think, an unusually personal account of Tolkien's own struggles to find beauty, wonder and enchantment in the bleak modern world - it is only coincidence that "The Sea Bell" is the only one of his major works for publication written in the first person?

About the Author
Luca Turin was born in 1953 and educated in France and the UK. He holds a PhD in Biophysics from the University of London, and his research touches on olfaction and anesthesia. His book The Secret of Scent describes some of his work on olfaction, on which he also lectured at TED. In 1992 he published, in French, the first book of critical perfume reviews. Later, in collaboration with Tania Sanchez, he wrote the more comprehensive Perfumes: the A-Z Guide and The Little Book of Perfumes. He has won the Prix Jasmin (France) twice and the Jasmine Prize (UK) once, for excellence in writing on perfume. He was a columnist for Swiss magazine NZZ Folio for eleven years and contributes perfume reviews to Style Arabia and WWD.

Delight, broken into bite-sized pieces. I can't remember the last time I wished any given essay I was reading were longer, let alone every one in a collection. Luca's writing is vivid, funny, and teaches me things without making me feel like a dummy for not knowing them already. Yes, half of the book is "about" perfume, but it's more than a collection of reviews or lists of notes. It helps to explain why those of us whose favorite intoxicants have names like "No. 5" and "L'heure Bleu" feel the way we do. All art opens windows onto the entire world, and perfumery is an art. Even if the only scented thing you've ever worn is by Axe, you should read this. (And then stop wearing Axe, for god's sake.)

An exceptional writer, one of my favorites. Turin's strength as a writer is his obvious ability to grasp the world and its complexity, metaphorically.....a most immediate, compelling and powerful form of comprehension. He is genius at translating the realm of boundarylessness, (like perfume and music) into tangible form. This book is pure entertainment and serious mind food. Next I suggest you check out Perfumes: The A-Z Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, which is "as gripping as any thriller".

Marshall McLuhan is the co-author, sorta

I rank this as one of the tem best books I own.
"The text owes much to Marshall McLuhan who, in fact, co-authored portions of an earlier version." This quote comes from the opening page - before the Foreword. It is well documented that McLuhan had trouble with writing and co-authors. Carpenter was an early collaborator from the Dew Line on and I think was able to interpret McLuhan the best.
Or was it the other way around? I hate to say this, but this may be the easiest read of McLuhan's ideas. It becomes hard to distinguish Carpenter's ideas from McLuhan's. It truly was a school of thought at University of Toronto. This book should get as much attention as any McLuhan text. (Note: it is hard to top the double dose of the "Medium is the Massage" in book and audio.)
Margaret Mead is quoted on the back cover saying "Astute staccato comment on present and needed changes in sensory modes, against a background of fantasied primitive life, annotated with extraordinary photographs." Ditto about the photos.
The "Visual Pun" is worth every cent you'll pay for this book that cost $3.95 in 1970. If you've got any McLuhan books, consider adding this to your collection - while you can.

Everyone should read this book!

This book is insightful in a way that most people do not nor can understand. I wish I would have read this twenty years earlier. Moreso for creative people, your basic consumer may have trouble understanding yet alone learning from this. It really makes you think about the relative nature of various societies and what you perceive.

Subsequent voyages were made to the Continent, Far East, Australia and Indonesia. Dealing mainly with life on board his ships and how he spent the sometimes prolonged spells in port, Ian begins his story with his entrance into the Merchant Navy as a radio officer and continues with his crossing to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth to join the Samite in Baltimore. During the Samite s fifteenmonth voyage, she called at various ports in the USA and North Africa while Ian s next ship, the Samforth, on her ten-month voyage, visited Canada, the USA, Egypt, Arabia, India, Mozambique, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Norway and Finland. Life Aboard a Wartime Liberty Ship is an engaging memoir of a young man s maritime adventures, the people he met, the countries he saw, and the intoxicating thrill of life at sea.

About the Author
On leaving the sea, Ian was employed as a clerk for two years, but disliked the job so much that he left to work at G.P.O. Coast Stations, spending a year at Wick Radio and two years at Portishead Radio. In 1956, he resigned to train as a teacher - at Edinburgh University and Moray House - qualifying in 1961. Four years later, he was promoted to Principal Teacher of Modern Studies at Viewforth School in Kirkcaldy, and retired in 1987. He wrote Dundee Memories, published by Birlinn in 2005, and he has also recorded six audio books, covering all his voyages. He has had articles in Sea Breezes, and, in 1997, won first Prize in the Article Category of the Marine Society's competition.

A story I've never heard before

There are more than enough books about the "fighting Navy" but very few that accurately depict the civvie/military life aboard a cargo carrier. This is about life in the cargo hauling business, those too often ignored contract seamen who carried the means of winning the war. There is little glamour and little battle action, it's more about a young man who went to sea and quietly grew up in the process. I had an uncle in the Merchant Marine; he never talked about what he did and how he lived, now I know. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in WW II.

Not what I expected...

There's very little information about the actual life aboard the ship. Most of it seems to be about his time spent at different ports and his interaction with the citizens. Mildly interesting, but not the exciting war story that I was expecting. I think it would be better to have a title reflecting this. Maybe: "My adventures in Foreign Ports during WWII".

An interesting nautical yarn

One oft times hears of the fighting side of naval actions yet little is paid to the logistical side that is oft time mundane and routine. This is one of those stories. The author while describing the typical activities of day spared the reader the boredom by going into depth about them. His adventures ashore while timid, show that the time in port was not hurry and dash but several days of down time. When there was action it was brief and intense and gave addage to the expression that in a combat theater things are 98% routine and boredom and 2% excitement and terror.
