About the Author
Sue-mei Wu, Ph.D., Lecturer of Chinese in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University, is currently undergoing the promotion process to associate teaching professor. She is the project leader and primary author for the "Chinese Link" textbook project. She has a Ph.D in linguistics, with a minor in language pedagogy and solid experience teaching Chinese at all levels. After receiving her Ph.D in linguistics from The Ohio State University in 1997, where she served as a graduate teaching associate for over four years, she taught Chinese at Harvard University from 1997-2000. She has been the coordinator for Elementary Chinese at CMU since she joined the CMU faculty in Fall 2000. She has received CMU Faculty Development Fund (2000, 2002) and Falk Grant (2001, 2003) awards to support developing online language and culture modules and incorporating them into Chinese courses at CMU. She is currently the co-author of a new textbook being developed at CMU for heritage learners, and co-author and chief editor of a new Classical Chinese textbook, written in cooperation with scholars from other institutions. Yueming Yu, PhD., is an Associate Teaching Professor and Coordinator of the Chinese Program of the Department of Modern Languages at CMU and co-author of this project. She came to CMU in 1992 to start the Chinese Program at the Department of Modern Languages and has been the Coordinator of the program ever since. She has 35 years of experience in teaching a foreign language. She was an Associate Professor of English as well as the coordinator of the International Journalism Program at the Shanghai International Studies University before she came to the US. She was also one ofthe founding members of the English newspaper ("Students Weekly") in Shanghai and a pioneer for the English News Program of Radio Shanghai. She has translated several books from English to Chinese, and compiled English-Chinese dictionaries. Her doctoral dissertation was a research on the criteria used in the selection of textbooks for teaching Chinese in the United States. Her current research focuses on pedagogical issues in Chinese language education with an emphasis on the relationship between teaching the language and teaching the culture, including a special focus on the teaching of heritage students. She is also the project leader of another textbook of Chinese for heritage students. Yanhui Zhang, Instructor of Chinese in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University, is a co-author and an editor for the project. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at CMU, teaching Elementary Chinese I and II. She is also a graduate student of MCALL (Masters of Computer Assisted Language Learning) and has recently started her Ph.D program in second language acquisition at CMU. She has taught various levels of English as well as English for business management in China. She is currently working on a project for the computer-assisted learning of Chinese language and culture.

The Fielding Brothers Make it All Worth While....

I downloaded this as a free selection and it was an enjoyable read. The Fielding Brothers themselves made it so. I love series written around brothers or close friends--it adds a depth of male commeraderie that I love to see. These brothers are all different, to be sure, but each will be an ideal man for someone....someday. I'd take any of the three :)

I would this novel 4 stars instead of only 3 were it not for the fact that it seemed to drag on for an eternity. Most of the action happens either in the first two chapters or the last. The entire middle of the novel seems to have no other purpose than to torture us into waiting longer for resolution.

Regardless, I will go on to the next book in the series (which I also downloaded for free). There is a sweetness to the author's writing that I appreciate. Although this book is decidedly steam-free, it does not lack romance. Some reviewers have categorized this as a Christian romance. I wouldn't call it that. There are mentions of God and the heroine's father is fond of quoting Bible verses, but that's nothing out of the ordinary for the time period involved. I would just classify this as a "sweet" romance, leaning towards the wholesome side. Those of you offended by graphic love scenes should be very pleased with the lack of them in this story.

There are several books in this series and when I downloaded this one, nearly all of them were free. I'll most likely make my way through the entire series--just because I'm curious of how and when the other brothers will find their love matches as well.

Romance doesn't get any better than this!

This is one of the best Regency-era romances I have read this year. Nicholas has been in love with Catherine Martin since they were children, an attachment about which she has no knowledge, and now he must suffer in silence when she is pawned off by her father to marry Nicholas's uncle, the Duke of Ashton.

A deep romance and attraction escalates between the Nicholas and Catherine although they struggle against it. Nicholas is the perfect, passionate, gorgeous hero every woman dreams of. He suffers for want of the one woman he cannot have. The reader can feel his agonies and experience his unfulfilled longings through the magic of Marie Higgin's masterful storytelling

Danger, deception, and mystery add immensely to the plot.

I didn't want to put this one down! A first-rate romance from beginning to end.

Maybe not officially characterized as Christian romance, this story is preachy and religious. I wish it was described better so the download want wasted on someone who doesn't enjoy the preaching (no matter how subtle).

A portrait of a desperate life.

I read "Parvana's Journey" over Thanksgiving break. This book, the sequel to Ellis' "The Breadwinner", continues the story of Parvana, a young Afghan girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to help her family survive. In this one, Parvana's been separated from her mom and siblings, and her father has just died. She travels across Afghanistan, picking up refugees as she goes along (including an infant boy, a boy missing a leg, and a girl who believes she is magically protected against mine fields). This installment was even more heartwrenching than the last and it is truly the perfect novel to read at Thanksgiving time - it makes you remember what you should be thankful for.

A Story of Hope

I am a fan of Deborah Ellis' work, especially since I read Parvana's Journey, and The Breadwinner. Parvana is a young girl who must disguise herself as a boy to support her family in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan (The Breadwinner), and then must try to find them again (Parvana's Journey).
Parvana is a wonderful character: she is smart, brave and resourceful. She lives in a terrible place and time, but she never admits defeat. ALthough the things that Parvana goes through are horrible, her story is really one of hope. And gives real insight into the situation in Afghanistan, and what people have to face there. Very readable, very relevant -- I highly reccomend this book.

The Golden Rule in Afghanistan

When Parvana sets out on her long journey to find her mother, sisters and brother, she is a new person. For the journey she cut her hair and put on boys clothes. The Taliban is ruling Afghanistan and Parvana cannot be wandering around, alone as a girl. In the beginning of her journey, Parvana stops at a village, left in ruins after a bomb. While she is wandering around the village, she hears a noise. Not an animal noise, but a human noise. She looks inside the hut with the noise and finds a thin, crying baby. In front of the baby is the body of a woman, with the flap of her burqa (a long garment covering the whole body) flipped up. Parvana decides to bring the baby with her on her journey. She names the baby Hassan and treats him as if he is her son. Along the way Parvana meets two more people. Asif is a one-legged, selfish and angry boy and Leila is a curious, caring and young girl. Parvana does not get along easily with Asif and Asif tends to throw rocks at her and insult her when he is mad. Hassan can sometimes drive Parvana crazy with all of his crying and Leila wanders off into mine fields and goes into villages when they are being bombed even when Parvana tells her not to. The most interesting thing about the story is that even though she can get very frustrated with them and their not always nice to her, Parvana always shares her food with them (even when theres only a little bowl of rice for their food), shares her blankets with them and treats them as though they were never ever mean, frustrating or annoying to her. Parvana is a perfect example of the Golden Rule. She treats Asif, Leila and Hassan the way she would want to be treated.

Really cool!

I am an 11 year old girl and I really loved this magazine. Even though the magazine was in Japanese I still understood practically the whole magazine. I think that the magazine is really cool. It's about the size of a phone book which is pretty big, I was really surprised by how big it was when I first saw it. The manga in this book is really really good some better than others. I hope you enjoy it if you buy it. If you buy one that isn't used it comes with 2 aikatsu cards, 1 puripara card, a really cute bag, and a few cute small cards which I think are awesome. I hope you like this if you get it, maybe it won't suit you but I still like it.

Interesting, insightful and lively

If you are over 50 and have a real mailbox, you know AARP, and this is the book you should read about this influential organization and the age group it represents. The book is lively, well written and very interesting, with insights about AARP and the "boomer generation" that I found fascinating. Fred Lynch goes well beyond the stereotypes of AARP and the "boomers", placing both in a broader perspective. With access to the leadership of AARP and interviews with many contemporary thinkers, Lynch shows how AARP has worked hard to overcome its image as a glorified insurance broker representing greedy seniors, and how 50 to 65 year-olds are far from a homogeneous group. Certainly some people now approaching retirement were protesters and involved in the social upheavals of the 1960s and early 1970s. But others were on the other side of these issues and have more traditional social views. As America debates its financial future, this book could not be more timely. Lynch clearly describes the differences in background and priorities between the "AARP generation" and those who are younger and are being asked to carry much of the financial burden for seniors who are generally unprepared for retirement. As these generational conflicts heat up, AARP may end up as a powerful uniting force for seniors. If you want to understand this important aspect of the future of our society, read this book!

Fascinating look at a leviathan organization

One Nation under AARP offers a fascinating profile of a leviathan organization struggling to balance competing agendas of its for-profit and advocacy divisions. Fred Lynch also deals thoughtfully with AARP's sometimes conflicting strategies to serve today's seniors and the aging baby boom generation.

More broadly, Lynch offers important insights into the pivotal role AARP plays in setting the national agenda for Social Security and Medicare. He examines thoughtfully the conflicting impulses of conservative older voters to support entitlements at the same time that they rail against "big government." He asks important questions about the potential potency of older Americans as a voting bloc, the future of health care reform and the Tea Party.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the inner workings of policymaking in Washington affecting older Americans.
