Highest recommendation of reprint of 1939 pulp horror magazine

This book is a reprint of the stories that appeared in the May/June 1939 pulp magazine STRANGE DETECTIVE MYSTERIES. The issue consists of six stories which I believe is the entire fiction content of that issue. The ads are not reproduced. This is a horror story pulp from a title which paralleled Dime Mystery(prior to early 1940's), Terror Tales, and 2 other from Pop. Publications. Three of 6 stories are by main-line writers for this type pulps. Russell Gray's byline is really Bruno Fischer. Book is printed on demand and is on very good quality paper. Reproduction of cover art is excellent. Dimensions of the book are slightly smaller than the pulp reprints from Adventure House. Print size is very good and very clear. In a quick scan I saw no obvious printing errors. Original story illos are included but in reduced size. This is #2 of the Black Mask Pulp Story Reader series which seems to have 10 issues out so far(on Amazon). Only 2 of 10 interested me, but there are other genres represented by some of the other eight issues. Priced excellently at $8. A really well done and unqualified recommendation book. Possible improvement suggestions: include author's names on title page and state categorically on copyright page that the contents of this book constitute the entire fiction contents on that particular pulp magazine.

Chapters cover modes of travel and the role of dragomen, the appearance of early guidebooks, and various other aspects of secular tourism, such as the development of travel bureaus in the Levant, notably the Thomas Cook & Son company, and the significant part that freemasonry played amongst tourism vendors.

The book primarily provides readers with a comprehensive account of early hotels, inns and hostels in Jerusalem, and the names and personal histories of their proprietors. Special attention is given to the development of the Mediterranean Hotel which was one of the most important establishments of its kind in nineteenth-century Jerusalem, and the fascinating story of the rediscovery of its second location. Many travellers passed through its doors, notably the writers Herman Melville and Mark Twain, U. S. Grant, the explorer Charles Warren, and members of the Survey of Western Palestine mapping party. This study includes a wide variety of pictorial archival materials, and was made possible through the overall sponsorship of the Shapell Manuscript Foundation.

About the Author
Shimon Gibson is a senior associate fellow at the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem and an adjunct professor of archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. During the past thirty years he has conducted numerous excavations and field surveys in different parts of Israel. He was the head of the research and scientific reports department of the Israel Antiquities Authority from 1995 to 1999.

An Exceptional Work: Delicious!

As both an historian and traveler to Jerusalem, I have assembled a fine collection of books on the history of Jerusalem.
Many of these contain meticulously researched accounts of travels and mishaps, carnage and lore. To read any of them, is to never finish them... they are filled with such enjoyable accounts and rare photographs; they are to be dissected and poured over, swirled and sniffed like a fine wine.... again and again.

This work is now the favorite of my collection. I've stayed at many of the hotels mentioned in this book, -again and again--and again, and talked with descendants of those celebrated in this book. Of many of these hotels; I've studied the ornate but heavily trod tile floors; wondered of the travelers who looked through the same panes of glass a hundred years prior, and explored hidden hallways that still carry the fragrance and paint of Ottoman days.
To Shimon, Yoni and Rupert: Thank you for a truly exceptional work. You've captured the essence of what I can only dream to have participated in.

Do not blink twice at the price of this extraordinary work. There will be a time when it is no longer available.......Do not be looking back at THAT time, wishing that you'd obtained a copy.

Moving and intense

This book is so many things -- an adventure, a steamy romance, a suspense thriller, a story of love finding a way in an impossible situation, and the journey of two broken people finding the strength to heal each other ... mix in clones, shifters, bad-ass Marines, passionate sex, and a generous dose of humor, and it's a ride you won't forget! perfect.

finally a sequel to laura's wolf and prisoner (it's free right now! check it out), the urban werewolf romance that COULD.

dj is a filippino werewolf marine kidnapped and held on a secret villainous underground base under a threat to his marine buddy, echo is a genetically engineered assassin blackmailed with the life of her deathly ill sister; in the last book they've fell in love, and in this one they're going to take the world on: with a pack of pissed-off made wolves, a playlist made of worst songs ever, a lot of kindness and some creative electrocution.

i loved that since echo and dj was already IN relationship, the author took time, space and care to develop THE relationship. there's a lot of action and shenanigans, ranging from hilarious (oh, this russian ambassador party!) to tragic (echo's everything) to all the things between. there's space for them to talk about childhood experiences and combat trauma and favorite movies and family memories and lack thereof, and touch each other and comfort each other and be there for each other. it's quietly, respectfully, beautifully sweet.

also features: a whole bingo worth of hurt/comfort, long-awaited cameo from laura's wolf, world's most hilarious fictitious romance novel titles charlie reads ('mated to the mongoose' is my personal favorite), and a lot of joy.

satisfying conclusion to the story begun in Prisoner

I was looking forward to the second half of Echo and DJ's story, and it didn't disappoint. I enjoyed the first book (Prisoner, free on Amazon right now), but I liked the second one even better. It's a good romance, but it's also an enjoyable action & intrigue story. The action scenes are as well written as the sex scenes. I also like that the "bad" guys are not too one-dimensional: the author adds just enough depth to their characterizations that you have to acknowledge them as human beings who make bad (sometimes REALLY bad) choices.

The exploration of PTSD and combat stress is fascinating and makes sense in the context of Echo and DJ's story, and allows us to see how their support of each other builds and deepens their relationship. Finally, I have to mention that I LOVE the werewolf mythology the author's built up in these novels. The individual powers each werewolf has are SO fun to read about (though that one power gives me the willies if I think too hard about it. You'll know which one I mean!).

I enjoyed Laura's Wolf, too, which was the first novel published in this series. But I think you can read them in either order: Laura's Wolf first, or Prisoner/Partner first.
