The underlying assumption, first proposed in a conversation with Marshall McLuhan, was that the Greek alphabet was responsible for a fundamental change in the psychology of the Athenians and that the creation of the great tragedies of Greek theatre was a kind of cultural response to a con dition of deep psychological crisis.

The Alphabet and the Brain consists of 21 articles relative to the effect of writing on cognition. It is unusual to find a book that is written consisting of essays which can hold the consistancy and quality found by a single author putting forth an idea. This book however achieves this and is very informative. One of the major themes is the impact of an alphabet as used by the Greeks verses other cultures and both sides are presented where you can make a case that there is a differance verses the contridictory findings as well. At this time more research is required to form a definative opinion but this will give you much food for thought.
