Puzzle Dungeon

Like all the Usborne Puzzle books, this one was a hit with my three grandchildren aged between 5 and 7. The book is a combination of "Where's Waldo" type object searches, mazes and quest type puzzlers - all on a medieval dungeon theme. The books are meaty enough to keep the youngsters interested for plenty of re-readings. Well worth the price!

was just one of the most beautiful 'Apsara' a pawn in Indra's scheme

With her stories mostly having mythological women as her subjects, Kavita Kane has done it again....taken one less significant character from the larger than life mythological stories and woven a delicate story bringing the character centre-stage.
Menaka, according to stories, was just one of the most beautiful 'Apsara' a pawn in Indra's scheme, sent from heaven to disturb Rishi Vishwamitra’s penance and prevent him from becoming more powerful than the devas in heaven.
But author Kavita Kane has given Menaka a personality. She becomes not just a beautiful sensuous nymphet meant as diversion or for physical gratification but also a woman with a ticking brain; she is aware of circumstances, she thinks and decides her own course of action. It is her story; of how she dares to take a path of love and loyalty, of how a game of deceit becomes her truth, of speaking her mind and standing up against wrong, of how her love is destroyed by the conniving Indra not once but twice, of her decision to sacrifice her happiness for the greater good of her children and her husband, of her desperation to reunite with estranged family, of her silently bearing the pain...
Since forever, men in Indian society have been given a status equal to God...infallible! Rishis like Vishwamitra leading a ascetic life have been revered and depicted as above all mortal insecurities. But the author has shown the human side of Vishwamitra. Known for his volatile quick temper and placing a curse on whoever dared to cause trouble in his prayers, Vishwamitra is absolutely besotted by charms of Menaka and gives in to his carnal desires like any other man and seeks pleasure in the arms of the woman. He finds much satisfaction and comfort in leading a householder till Menaka pushes him away so he could reach a higher goal.
The lucid description of Menaka's charm and beauty is very attractive and made me wish to see this lovely damsel in flesh. Kavita Kane has described the romantic and amorous episodes between the sage and celestial nymph with such artistic beauty that nowhere it seems either out of place or vulgar...it gives you goose pimples instead... it is almost delicious to read.
'All is well that ends well' and Menaka stands vindicated of her guilt of deviating the great sage from his path of attaining highest wisdom, her children have no ill feeling towards her, her sacrifice is recognised and held honourable by her husband, Vishwamitra and Indra learns a lesson of humility.
This book is as delightful to read as 'Sita's Sister' with easy syrupy language. Read it for that relaxed feeling and easy joy.

Not an easy read, but...

This book is the February selection for our Arts & Culture Book Club. It's not an easy read for the lay person, and my attempts at explaining its concepts to fellow members who have yet to read it have fallen short. But, I have continued to read it because it's fascinating - despite being dense. I find myself looking for additional books to read (I've already bought and read a short book about Klee and his use of color and Kandinsky's "On The Spiritual in Art") and downloading Wagner and Mussorgsky - artists and musicians discussed in this book who warrant further exploration. I am looking forward to our group's discussion of the book later this month. It's a stretch for us but, I believe, will be invaluable as we continue to read about modern art and artists.

Helpful info but you have to drag the information out of the writer

The first 100 pages were absolutely daunting for me. I am not a romance novel or any type of novel reader for that matter, so I threatened to quit reading it several times, but after the first 100 pages it started giving some information. There was a huge build up of all of this brilliant information that the ancient and wise "Claudia" was going to eventually unload and it barely was a slow trickle finally getting to the point. I can tell that a lot of work went into creating a story to wrap around what could have been a nice, compact instructional on how to better understand men. As a researcher, I would have much preferred a list of what to do and what not to do, with the rationales and sources. Had it not been for "Karen's" notes that were clearly laid out in short, bullet style lists (after each "lesson" with the old wise woman "Claudia"), I would have never wrapped my mind around the point. Bravo Alison for putting the notes in to bring nerds like me back to the point. Apparently most women like novel type books, hence the high ratings here on Amazon. I am not one of those women, but I do appreciate the point.

1.)WE EMASCULATE MEN.
2.)MEN DO NOT THINK LIKE WOMEN. WE PUNISH MEN BECAUSE WE THINK THAT THEY ARE JUST HAIRY WOMEN MISBEHAVING, BUT THEY THINK NOTHING LIKE US BECAUSE THEY HAVE FOCUSED AWARENESS (ONE MINDEDNESS/ CAN GO TO TARGET AND GET THE ONE THING THEY WENT IN FOR) AND WE HAVE DIFUSE AWARENESS (NOTICE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AT ONE TIME).(Which is why they will step over clothes in the floor to get to whatever thing they were set on doing.. they never see the clothes, and we punish them by nagging as though they did see the clothes and refused to help)
3.)MEN NEED TO BE PROVIDERS AND HEROES. USE THESE WORDS (called the language of heroes in the book)AND BUILD UP YOUR MAN. MAKE HIM ADORE YOU WITH YOUR CHARMS AND EDIFICATION AND HE WILL BEGIN TO LIFT YOU UP AND WANT TO PLEASE YOU.

Every woman, young or not, married or not, in a romantic relationship or not should have this information. There is no chance for relationships with men if we do not change of paradigm. This is the most powerful paradigm shifter I have ever found on this regard.

From a man's perspective... This blew my mind.

Being a masculine man, I rarely cry. But I have to admit that I cried through the first half of this book (in a manly way, of course).

I have to say that this book blew my mind. Having a feminist mother and growing up in a time when men have been looked down upon for being men, I grew up knowing masculine shame.

When I got out of high school, that shame turned into anger... anger towards women. And the first decade of my grownup dating life was filled with destructive relationships, lots of pain and frustration, and copious amounts of blame. I thought relationships were about fighting to get your needs met.

I thought women just wanted to hurt and humiliate men.

It wasn't until I was 28 when I thought to myself... "There must be a better way."

This book outlines that better way... at least part of it. Relationships are about partnership now... where two people work together to get their needs met. You get into a relationship because of how you enrich each others lives.

If you are currently struggling with your relationships to men... like you're angry at men... you think they're liars and cheaters... you think they aren't trust worthy... then GET THIS BOOK.

It will help you change your perspective on men and how relationships COULD be. Powerful stuff. I recommend it for women AND for men.

About the Author
Dr. Anne Buyle Padias earned a Ph.D. in Belgium, University of Gent, in organic polymer chemistry in 1975. Her research, in a partnership with H.K. Hall, Jr. at the University of Arizona, generally dealt with the synthesis of highly strained monomers to obtain novel polymers, and the elucidation of polymerization mechanisms. She is currently the Director of Academic Services in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona, in addition to being the Instructional Laboratory Manager for the Organic Chemistry Labs and a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry. She also teaches a Chemical Safety class and is involved in undergraduate education issues, such as a vertical integration of the curriculum.
